Looking Back – What was Happening in Thirroul & nearby in 1997?

By

DEAR RESIDENTS of the THIRROUL, BULLI & AUSTINMER,

This is just a short note to let you know of some of the developments proposed in Thirroul :

  1. RETURN OF CINEMA TO THIRROUL … a 4 cinema complex is proposed for the Kings Skating Rink Site, formerly the Kings Theatre up until the 1960’s – the skating complex is proposed to be moved to the Vista Site at Woonona.
  2. EXCELSIOR SITE between Seafoam Avenue/Phillips St Thirroul and Mountain Rd Austinmer rezoning/development application is expected to be submitted to Council in 1997, once studies are completed. The number of residential lots sought is expected to be well in excess of 30, which had been the subject of discussion in 1991-1992 with the former owner, KCC.
  3. UP BEHIND ARMAGH PARADE / CORNOCK AVENUE a subdivision approved in 1982 but never developed has been revived. At this stage I am not sure of the number of lots, but understand that it will be of the order of 13 – 15.
  4. HEADLANDS HOTEL SITE – a lower rise development has been proposed which incorporates hotel tourist accommodation, bars, restaurant and conference centre, serviced tourist apartments have also been mentioned.

WHAT’S HAPPENED TO……..

THE THIRROUL COMMUNITY CENTRE/LIBRARY PROPOSED FOR THE FORMER SHELL SERVICE STATION SITE?
Council is still waiting for a “clean bill of health” in regards to contamination of the site – before it finalises purchase and commences construction.

MCDONALD’S at WOONONA?
McDonalds has applied to vary the approval conditions for the site, including widening of Hillcrest Avenue, instead of a roundabout, with entry & exit from the Highway.

THE MUSIC BOWL AT THIRROUL BEACH PARK?
Representatives from Austinmer Lions Club & Thirroul Village Committee have met with Council representatives to explore options – no plans have been prepared and all attendees are aware of the need for local residents to be involved in planning and designs of either a temporary or permanent structure.

SANDON PT/SOUTH THIRROUL REZONING – RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT
Council has voted on the rezoning – the documents have been sent to the local office of the Department of Urban Affairs & Planning, but not yet sent to the Sydney office of the Department of Urban Affairs & Planningand gazettal by the State Govenment Minister. Following this development application for the actual subdivision construction can be lodged with Council. After Council approval of the development of the subdivision, and also subdivison construction, building applications to build dwellings can be lodged by purchasers.

SO WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN 1997?
